Straight from your Second Quarter Test Paper



In the short story "A Rose for Emily," why do you think Emily deserves a rose on her funeral?


Emily, being entirely mysterious after her father's death and worsened after the disappearance of Homer Barron, deserves a rose for keeping her head high even if she was alone with only a negro servant to tend to her needs because her strict father drove all her suitors away. She didn't get angry at the fact that the townspeople were always talking about her and gossiping on what she might be doing inside her house, talking about how her life should be, betting if she will marry Homer Barron or not and meddling in her life since her father passed away. She survived the loneliness that brought her to incarcerate herself in her house and age until she finally died. That sort of life would be hard for anybody. But Emily did live it. And that is why she deserves a rose on her funeral.

The rose may symbolize love, freedom and feminism -- the three things that Emily didn't have but longed for. As a child, Emily Grierson didn't receive the love that she expected from her father. Even as a grown woman, she was not allowed by her father to date, which again hindered her craving for affection. As for freedom and feminism, she did not experience the life that should be experienced by a woman. The reason behind this is, again, her father's controlling attitude.

Explain the metaphorical quote: Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm. (Publilius Syrus)

This means that when a situation is in control, or when everything's all right, anyone can do anything they want with no one opposing them. When a situation is normal, everyone act like themselves, probably carefree and enjoying. But when the storm lashes against the boat -- when the situation is going out of our hands, and everybody who was so carefree before are panicking -- it takes a strong person to grip the helm and steer the ship into the calm waters, to take control and relieve the situation before it worsens.

My Umbrella of Hair

My Name and How I Got It

My name is Clyve. I know it's an unusual name. You would have met people with the names Clive or Clyde, but mine is neither of those two. My mother wanted my name to be Clive but my father wanted to call me Clyde, from the basketball player. They even thought I was going to be a girl with the name Cristina. But, as you can see, I turned out to be a boy, so they decided to mix their preferred names and came up with a unique one "Clyve." I bet you have never heard of a name like this before.

Thoughts on Growing Up

For me, it is important to undergo the stage of adolescence. We need to go and be adolescents for us to be prepared for the harder challenges in life as we enter adulthood. Adolescence is the time where we can adjust and fine-tune ourselves to become better persons. Also, being an adolescent is fun -- it is where most of the good things in our life happen. It is as if we will miss "half of our life" if we would not undergo this stage. Adolescence allows us to experience real things and to start new endeavors. It is in adolescence where we accomplish success against challenges, commit mistakes, and learn new things as we step up from our fall, wash the dirt away and continue our race until it finally comes to an end.

Every person, just like a butterfly, must undergo change, and be good citizens. Every person is a butterfly -- starts as a tiny speck, grows like a caterpillar, and undergoes a silent, dark time to develop, until he or she finally becomes a colorful butterfly and fly high in the sky, towards the golden sunlight, our future.

What We Think (from Second Quarter Periodic Exams)

Only a life lived for others is worth living. -Albert Einstein 

God gave us life so we could experience how fun it is to live. But each of us is given a mission: to spread His Word. In accomplishing our mission, we experience how to love and be loved, how to cry, to smile, to laugh, to fall down, and to stand up again. In our journey, God gives us blessings to spend by sharing these to others. God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others. Other people might not realize your existence, but maybe you have made one soul breathe easier because you lived. If that happens, then you will feel that your life has a purpose. If life has a purpose, then it is worth living.

We should not live only for ourselves but for others. A life lived just for yourself is pointless. If we live for someone, everyday you'll have a reason to smile, wake up and have the courage to face your problems. You'll have inspiration which is one of the best things in life. Why is it so hard for narcissists to live a happy life? It is because they only think of themselves and live for themselves, and do not care about the people around them. What about those who do care for others? They live a happy life because everyday, they find inspiration; they find reasons to live, not for themselves but for the people around them.

We can consider our life worth living if we spend it here on earth doing great and remarkable things, not for ourselves but for others. Doing great things to help others can satisfy us. Our joy is priceless. We live here on earth not just to consume the resources but to make a change in the life of others. For example, as students, we can help our classmates -- we can teach them when they do not understand the lesson. We can also be a good model to them in love, honesty, and respect.
